If you’re one of the millions of Americans on the hunt for a job right now, you’ve got a lot going in your favor. And with spring right around the corner, many businesses are hiring as they get ready to kick some of their summer projects into high gear. But before you start your journey toward new opportunities, there are a few things you should know.
In this post from One Tech Engineering in Minnesota, we’re looking into some of the things you need to know before getting started on your March job search. To connect with our engineering and technical recruiters, give us a call.
1. Take advantage of the job market by committing to an active job search.
The job market tends to get saturated with job hunters during the first couple of months of the year. But as we move into spring, things will start to ease up a bit, which is exactly why it’s a great time to jump into the job search with both feet. And although there are plenty of opportunities out there right now to be had, there’s no guarantee that the current conditions will last. That’s why if you’re going to put your efforts into a job search, now is not the best time to do so casually.
2. Consider your options carefully.
Right now, there are more jobs than employees to fill them. However, it’s a good idea to think in the long-term and consider where the job market and economy will be in the future if the reality of the opportunity doesn’t play out as you hope it will.
Carefully consider how well you think the company will fare in the short-term and long-term. Will the firm you’re considering be able to weather any economic challenges that take place over the next year? Will your position be stable if the company faces any serious economic challenges? Whatever decision you make, be sure you’re going into it with eyes wide open so you can make a completely informed decision.
3. Focus on your problem-solving skillset.
At the top of the year, most firms are looking for forward-thinkers who can head up major projects. But as companies begin to move ahead with those projects and goals, they’re going to be keeping an eye out for professionals who can help them troubleshoot what isn’t working well and overcome hurdles.
Head into your interviews armed with questions to demonstrate you can prioritize problem-solving, and then focus on the types of solution-minded skills you bring to the table. Be ready to speak about your problem-solving skillset in specific terms rather than vague ones, offering up examples of solutions you have contributed to in the past.
