A controls engineer is responsible for assisting in various electrical engineer disciplines. An understanding of design engineering, automation, machine controls, power controls, and programming is typical. Control engineers also likely will have a BSEE.

A controls engineer works on complex technical projects from the concept and initial design through implementation and testing. In this process, the controls engineer will participate and support the startup and commissioning of projects. He or she will also develop technical solutions, resolve project issues, and read and understand related drawings and technical documentation.

Some other fields in which controls engineers work include:

- PLC programming & PC Programming (Allen Bradley, Siemens, RS Logic, GE controls, Fanuc,  programming)
- HMI programming (Human Machine Interface)
- Motion control system design and implementation

Robotics or pick and place machine controls/programming
